Larry Trissel

Larry Trissel obtained his Pharmacy degree from Butler University in 1969 and began his career with a residency in hospital pharmacy in the United States Public Health Service. He continued with that organization in various positions at the National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and the National Cancer Institute over the next 20 years. While at the NCI, he was part of a team that developed over 100 investigational anticancer drugs for clinical trial. In 1989, he joined the University of Texas, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center as the Director of Clinical Pharmaceutics Research serving there until 2006. He is now an independent author and consultant. His research interests include drug stability with other drugs and devices and new drug dosage form development.

Larry is best known as the author of the Handbook on Injectable Drugs, a core pharmacy reference work found in nearly every hospital and home care pharmacy in the United States and in most of the rest of the world as well. First appearing in 1977, this work has been in continuous publication for 29 years. A new 14th edition will be published in 2006. In addition to the Handbook, Larry has written the Pocket Guide to Injectable Drugs, Trissel's Stability of Compounded Formulations, Trissel's Calcium and Phosphate Compatibility in Parenteral Nutrition, Trissel's Tables of Physical Compatibility, and for 10 years wrote the National Cancer Institute's Investigational Drug - Pharmaceutical Data book. He recently authored the new comprehensive electronic resource Trissel's 2 Clinical Pharmaceutics Database. In addition, he is the author or co-author of over 180 original articles, book chapters, editorials, etc. including 145 original research articles.

Larry is a member of various professional organizations and societies, including the American Pharmacy Association, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He has been the recipient of a number of awards and honors throughout his career, including the APhA Distinguished Achievement Award in 2002 and the Award for Sustained Contributions to the Published Literature from ASHP in 1996.

Larry currently serves as a member of the USP Expert Committees on Pharmacy Compounding for both non-sterile and sterile preparations, and he is also a member of the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board's Standards Task Force. He also served as the Chairman of Texas State Board of Pharmacy Task Force on Pharmacy Compounding. In addition, he served on the Board of Visitors advisory committee to the Butler University College of Pharmacy and was its chairman for four years. He was recently selected to be a Distinguished Alumnus of Butler University in its Inaugural Class.
