Closed System Transfer Device Validated for use with IV Automation
Winnipeg, MB, April 7, 2010 - IV Automation is becoming an increasingly comprehensive technology after medical device company Intelligent Hospital Systems validated ICU Medical Inc.'s ChemoCLAVE(TM) Bag Spike for use with RIVA (Robotic IV Automation System)- a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags.
In addition to RIVA's proven effectiveness in enhancing patient safety, expediting the compounding process and reducing waste and technicians' exposure to a multitude of drug compounds, the integration of the ChemoCLAVE Bag Spike lessens the risk of needlestick injury and exposure during bag spiking post-compounding, and bag tears.
"This validation is essentially the final part of RIVA's chemo prep solution," notes Niels Erik Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems. "It not only increases patient safety through the automated preparation of sterile and accurate doses, but it also improves the safety of technicians, who will no longer have to handle cytotoxic drugs while they are being mixed." The addition of a ChemoCLAVE Bag Spike prior to preparation allows for hazardous drug preparation inside RIVA and eliminates the requirement to spike the bag post-compounding.
For Jane Arnot, IH Systems' VP Customer Sales and Service, the validation of the ChemoCLAVE Bag Spike has notably enhanced RIVA and has provided some incentive for those institutions that have not yet adopted automated systems. "RIVA has been proven effective in both testing and its implementation into working healthcare institutions. We are confident that RIVA's ability to interface with the ChemoCLAVE Bag Spike, along with the system's proven track record, will help drive further integration into hospitals and pharmacies while building confidence and support from directors of pharmacies worldwide."
RIVA (Robotic IV Automation System) - a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags - is the first product developed by Winnipeg-based medical device company Intelligent Hospital Systems. RIVA has been adapted to accept bags fitted with the ICU Medical ChemoCLAVE Bag Spike. For more information, please visit www.rivasystem.com.

World's Leading Manufacturer of IV Solutions Chooses Three RIVA Systems
February 17, 2010, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - Following the successful integration of RIVA (Robotic IV Automation System)-a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags-into three healthcare institutions in 2009, and the announcements of several more sales for installation in 2010, medical device company Intelligent Hospital Systems has confirmed the sale of three additional RIVA systems for cytotoxic drug preparation in 2010. This sale was to a major worldwide medical products and services company, who have also indicated an interest in purchasing several more systems once RIVA is fully integrated into their operations.
This is the third multi-unit deal that Intelligent Hospital Systems has signed in recent months and with the latest announcement about proven performance of RIVA in the field, confidence in the ability of automation in the IV admixture space is growing.
In addition to expediting the compounding process and enhancing patient safety, RIVA has notably improved work and safety conditions for hospital staff, reducing their exposure to a multitude of drug compounds-namely cytotoxic drugs. "With increasing concern over potential cytotoxic drug harm to workers, automated systems like RIVA that reduce drug exposure become an increasingly viable technology," notes Dr. Niels Erik Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems. The RIVA system enables automated compounding of individual patient doses of cytotoxic drugs into a range of diverse container forms including syringes and bags, which is key to supporting safe and flexible therapy.
For Jane Arnot, IH Systems VP Customer Sales and Service, the success of RIVA in day-to-day healthcare practices is key in growing confidence and support from directors of pharmacies worldwide. "Part of the reason that the RIVA system has been so effective is its flexibility in supporting hospitals' and pharmacies' broad base of drug compounds. The three RIVA systems in place are running at least 12 different drug compounds on a regular basis for both patient specific and batch preparations. RIVA is quickly becoming an integrated part of these healthcare institutions' operations," states Arnot. "We are also very excited about the interest that we have seen worldwide in the use of RIVA for both cytotoxic drug preparation as well as non-cytotoxic drug preparation. This speaks to the confidence that our customers have that RIVA will address the unique concerns and challenges in both of these diverse environments," concludes Arnot.

IH Systems' RIVA Surpasses 100,000 Automated Patient Doses
WINNIPEG, MB - February 9, 2010 - Intelligent Hospital Systems' RIVA (Robotic IV Automation System)-a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags-is proving robotic automation's place in health care after surpassing 100,000 safe patient doses this January.
While RIVA has been proven effective in validation tests-eliminating potential microbial contamination in the direct compounding area introduced by human contact while also reducing drug residue in the compounding environment and on surfaces of prepared doses-the true success of the system has been its full integration into health care operations.
In addition to enhanced patient safety, automation has helped improve working conditions for hospital staff by freeing them from repetitive tasks, expediting the compounding process, reducing waste and reducing their exposure to a multitude of drug compounds. "In January alone, our clients using RIVA averaged in excess of 26 doses per hour and 210 doses per day. One of our clients exceeded 27 doses per hour and used RIVA to prepare an average of about 300 doses per day," notes Niels Erik Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems. "In addition to these throughput numbers, all of our clients are running at least 12 different drug compounds in RIVA on a regular basis for both patient specific and batch preparations," Hansen concludes.
For Jane Arnot, IH Systems VP Customer Sales and Service, the continued success of RIVA in hospitals and pharmacies is definitely positive and has provided assurance for institutions who have not yet adopted automated systems. "As hospitals and pharmacies are becoming familiar with RIVA, the system's efficiencies are really becoming apparent. Doses are continuing to climb and we expect over 200,000 by the end of May from the three systems currently in place." In addition to the thorough research, development and commissioning program of the RIVA System, the success of RIVA in day-to-day health care practices has been integral in building confidence and support from directors of pharmacies worldwide.

Royal Victoria Hospital Leads Industry with Canada's First RIVA System
Winnipeg, MB - January 7, 2010 - The Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) in Barrie, Ontario is the first Canadian hospital to order a RIVA System (Robotic IV Automation System) - a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags from Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems). The RIVA System will be used in RVH's new Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre; under construction as part of the hospital's $450 million redevelopment slated to open in early 2012.
"The strategic investment and introduction of the RIVA System into Canadian hospitals and pharmacies is a tremendous landmark in the adaptation of robotic innovation," acknowledges Niels Erik Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems. "RVH's commitment to innovative medical practices is a true testament to the organization and its staff," he concludes.
In addition to supporting USP 797 compliance, a set of strict medical compliances not mandatory for Canadian hospitals but one RVH continually seeks to achieve, the RIVA System will allow the hospital to compound ready-to-use sterile doses that are currently manually compounded. For Ben Szuuts, Sales Manager for Manrex Limited, the organization responsible for the sale of the RIVA System, collaborating with RVH on this milestone project has reinforced the important role robotic automation plays in the evolution of healthcare. "The signing of this agreement with RVH is another step in the right direction for Canadian Healthcare," says Szuuts. "We are very excited to be working with RVH. Their commitment to patient and staff safety solidifies their position as leaders in Canadian Healthcare."
