UCSF Medical Center to Lease Multiple RIVA Systems
December 4, 2006, Anaheim, California- The University of California Medical Center in San Francisco (UCSF) has signed a Letter of Intent to lease two RIVA Systems (Robotic Intravenous Automation)- a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags- from Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems). UCSF Medical Center is recognized throughout the world as a leading health care provider and is known for innovative medicine, advanced technology and compassionate care.
According to Kevin McGarry, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems, this announcement is a significant milestone for the company. "We are absolutely delighted to be working with UCSF," he says. "We are gratified that UCSF, a leader in providing the best in healthcare services, has determined RIVA is the solution they need to enhance patient safety by reducing IV admixture preparation errors," McGarry explains.
For UCSF, RIVA will play a significant role in helping them establish a USP 797 compliant sterile compounding area, and will help them validate their environment and process. This enhanced environment will allow the pharmacy to more easily perform sterility testing on final product and document improved beyond-use-dating. In addition to assisting with USP 797 compliance, RIVA will allow the pharmacy to compound ready-to-use sterile doses that are currently purchased from outside vendors. This will provide UCSF the ability to improve their control over production and more efficiently manage their inventory.
According to Jane Arnot, Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Business Development for RIVA, the Letter of Intent with UCSF demonstrates RIVA's key role in addressing patient safety through automation. "By signing the Letter of Intent, UCSF demonstrates their ongoing leadership by investing in patient safety while providing complex patient care," says Arnot. She indicated placement of the RIVA units would occur after final verification and validation testing is completed.
RIVA (Robotic IV Automation System) -a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags- is the first product developed by Winnipeg-based medical device company Intelligent Hospital Systems. For more information, please visit www.rivasystem.com.

Scientific Advisors Confirm RIVA Verification and Validation Plans
Sept 7, 2006, Winnipeg, MB- The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems) met recently to review and confirm the verification and validation plans for IH Systems' Robotic Intravenous Automation System (RIVA). The SAB is comprised of six leading pharmacists with expertise in automation:
-
Michael Horseman, Spohn Memorial Medical Centre, Corpus Christi, Texas
-
James J Posendek, St Vincent Charity Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio
-
Mark Siska, St Mary's Hospital, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
-
Timothy R Stacy, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia
-
Larry Trissel, TriPharma Communications, Cashiers, North Carolina, formerly of MD Anderson, Houston, Texas
The SAB meets regularly to provide scientific expertise and advice on the progress of RIVA's design and development progress. The most recent meeting focused on an in-depth review and evaluation of RIVA. Larry Trissel of TriPharma Communications has supported the technology behind RIVA since its early days. "I've seen a lot of automation products come and go, and RIVA is different," he says. "Other systems are not as complete or as flexible as RIVA- for example, they are for syringes only, or they only support products from a certain supplier," Trissel explains. "RIVA may also limit the opportunity for microbial contamination as compared to manual compounding," he says.
According to Jane Arnot, Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Business Development for RIVA, the input and guidance from the SAB has been invaluable in moving RIVA forward. "We are very fortunate to have such a distinguished group of SAB members, each with extensive industry experience. Collectively, their insight into the needs of Pharmacy has been critical in both the design and the completion of the validation and verification test plan," she says. Arnot explains the verification testing phase for RIVA will be completed in November 2006 and the first current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) manufactured unit is expected to be available in the summer of 2007.
RIVA (Robotic IV Automation System) -a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags- is the first product developed by Winnipeg-based medical device company Intelligent Hospital Systems. For more information, please visit www.rivasystem.com.

The first product developed by IH Systems is RIVA (Robotic IV Automation system)-a self-contained unit for filling IV syringes and bags.
According to Kevin Mc Garry, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems, the appointment of ManRex as Canadian sales agent is an important step for the company. "This appointment validates our technology from a sales perspective and accelerates our sales program," says Mc Garry. "ManRex's knowledge and experience with medication delivery systems, sales and marketing to health care facilities in Canada will be a tremendous asset." Mc Garry states that ManRex's initial focus will be on creating market awareness as RIVA completes engineering validation and pharmacy directed patient use testing this fall. He indicates an announcement concerning the launch of the sales model for the United States market is pending.
Fiona Webster Mourant, President of ManRex sees the IH Systems technology as a great addition and complement to their current product offerings. "We've seen a lot of automation devices from around the world and are excited by the potential safety and efficiency benefits offered by the RIVA system," says Webster Mourant. Intelligent Hospital Systems Set to Deliver Automated Solutions for Hospitals
June 26, 2006, Winnipeg, MB- Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems), a medical device company focused on automated health care solutions, is poised to help hospitals across North America meet the challenges of improved patient and operator safety, efficiency and effectiveness of their pharmacies and the demands of the changing regulatory environment through the use of "intelligent automation".
Hospitals have been slower to adopt automation than other industries, says Kevin McGarry, Chief Executive Officer of IH Systems. "This is understandable given their overriding concern for patient safety," he says. "We believe automation of certain tasks within the hospital environment such as intravenous drug (IV) preparation can actually improve patient safety by reducing the potential for human error." McGarry points out that in addition to enhanced patient safety, automation of certain processes can improve working conditions for hospital staff by reducing their exposure to potentially hazardous drugs and freeing them from repetitive tasks.
The initial product developed by IH Systems is RIVA (Robotic IV Automation system)-a selfcontained unit for filling IV syringes and bags that was developed from research conducted by a team at the St Boniface Research Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The first RIVA unit will begin final testing in August 2006 and is expected to be ready for pharmacy directed patient use in a hospital environment in early November 2006.
